چکیده

We investigate the problem of code generation for DSP systems on a chip. Such systems devote a limited quantity of silicon to program ROM, so application software must be maximally dense. Additionally, the software must be written so as to meet various high-performance constraints, which may include hard real-time constraints. Unfortunately, current compiler technology is unable to generate dense, high-performance code for DSPs, whose architectures are highly irregular. Consequently, designers often resort to programming application software in assembly { a time-consuming, error-prone, and non-portable task. Thus, DSP compiler technology must be improved substantially. We describe some optimizations that signi cantly improve the quality of compiler-generated code. Our optimizations are applied globally and even across procedure calls. Additionally, they are applied to the machine-dependent assembly representation of the source program. Our target architecture is the Texas Instruments' TMS320C25 DSP.

REALM: A Loop Memory Access Optimization Technique with Loop-Carried Data Dependence Analysis for DSP Applications

Reducing memory accesses is particularly important for DSP applications since they are widely used in embedded systems and need to be executed with high performance and low power consumption. In this paper, we focus on optimizing loops which are the most critical sections for DSP applications. We propose a machineindependent intermediate-code-level loop memory access optimization technique, REA...

Copy Propagation Optimizations for VLIW DSP Processors with Distributed Register Files

High-performance and low-power VLIW DSP processors are increasingly deployed on embedded devices to process video and multimedia applications. For reducing power and cost in designs of VLIW DSP processors, distributed register files and multi-bank register architectures are being adopted to eliminate the amount of read/write ports in register files. This presents new challenges for devising com...

An Efficient Algorithm for Pointer-to-Array Access Conversion for Compiling and Optimizing DSP Applications

The complexity of Digital Signal Processing (DSP) applications has been steadily increasing due to advances in hardware design for embedded processors. To meet critical power consumption and timing constraints, many DSP applications are hand-coded in assembly. Because the cost of hand-coding is becoming prohibitive for developing an embedded system, there is a trend toward the use of highlevel ...

Automatic Array Access Recovery in Pointer based DSP Codes

Efficient implementation of DSP applications are critical for embedded systems. However, current applications written in C, make extensive use of pointer arithmetic making compiler analysis and optimisation difficult. This paper presents a method for conversion of a restricted class of pointer-based memory accesses typically found in DSP codes into array accesses with explicit index functions. ...

Synthesis of Embedded Software from Synchronous Dataflow Specifications

The implementation of software for embedded digital signal processing (DSP) applications is an extremely complex process. The complexity arises from escalating functionality in the applications; intense timeto-market pressures; and stringent cost, power and speed constraints. To help cope with such complexity, DSP system designers have increasingly been employing high-level, graphical design en...
